There is a common understanding that businesses that grow exceptionally quickly may be referred to as either ‘Gazelles’ or ‘Gorillas’.
The term ‘Gazelle’ can applied to businesses that fit within the OECD’s classification of high growth but that were born five years or less before the three year observation period.
‘Gorillas’ are large businesses that grow very quickly to become multi-nationals. These types of business are therefore rare. Examples include Google, Skype, Vodafone and so on.
