The Economic Impact of Sport
The East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) has appointed a team to provide a comprehensive view of the existing value of the Sports economy to the East Midlands region, and to assess the future potential for the sector, including recommendations and priorities.
The project is being conducted in conjunction with PAWA and David Taylor Partnership.
The research aims and objectives are:
- Provide emda with a clear understanding of the nature of the sports industry within the East Midlands
- Assess the regional potential and future capacity of the sports industry linked to the strengths, weaknesses and distinctive characteristics of the region, including reference to R&D, enterprise and innovation agenda, employment, learning and skills and technological expertise at HE level and industry level.
- Identify the present, potential and future growth areas, linked closely to the current and future government policies, investment opportunities and industry characteristics
- Identify the potential barriers to technology transfer and business development including assessment of whether the region possesses the right skills provision to meet future needs, the right linkages between ICT, innovation, technology transfer and skills and learning development; all of which in turn contribute towards providing the right climate for investment
- Identify the future needs to promote and sustain business growth and new business start-ups, linked to business support requirements to maximise the economic growth potential of the sports industry in the East Midlands
- Highlight existing areas of best practice in the contribution of sport to economic development from either within the region, UK or aboard that could be adopted and adapted in the formulation of an action plan for sport in the East Midlands
- Assess how the sports industry (public, private and voluntary sectors) can be more effectively engaged in the development of the sports industry and cluster development processes identified.
- Identify, map and assess the characteristics of the emerging sports cluster, centred around work at Loughborough, bringing together the existing activities and future potential at Loughborough University, Loughborough sports park, English Institute of Sport, Queens Medical Centre/City Hospital sports exercise and sports medicine research. This should result in the development of a specific action plan for the development of this specific sport cluster based upon short, medium and long-term vision for this sports cluster
- Recommendations on the way forward, including a detailed list of priorities as well as the identification of the activities that emda should focus on based upon the central theme outlined above
